YouTube is back up after a short downtime

YouTube, Alphabet Inc’s streaming platform, on Wednesday said its homepage was back up and running, after saying earlier it was down for some users.

The company did not disclose the number of users affected by the outage. However, one report claimed that more than 60,000 users in the United States pointed to problems.

“The YouTube homepage will be back for all your video needs,” YouTube said.

Data on Downdetector shows that at the peak of the outage, more than 60,000 user reports pointed to problems with the video-sharing app in the US alone as of 07:20 PM ET. The number of reports has now been reduced to 700.

Meanwhile, social media apps by Meta Inc and Elon Musk-owned Twitter also experienced similar problems on Wednesday. Meta’s Facebook and Instagram were down for thousands of US users, while some Twitter users were unable to tweet.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk said the microblogging site would be back up and running later today after some users complained about not being able to tweet on Wednesday, soon being met with a message saying “You’ve passed exceed the daily Tweet limit.”

“There were many internal and external problems with the app at the same time. Service will be back up tonight,” Musk tweeted early Thursday.

Twitter was down for about 9,000 users in the United States as of 5 p.m. Eastern Time, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com. The number of outages dropped to 2,500 at 6 p.m. Eastern.

Twitter may not work as expected for some of you. Sorry for the trouble. We are aware and working to fix this,” the Twitter support account tweeted on Wednesday.

The outage comes as billionaire boss Musk cuts Twitter’s staff since taking over the company in October, raising concerns about the service’s viability with fewer engineers.

It was reported that Musk told Twitter employees on Wednesday to pause development of the new feature “to maximize the stability and robustness of the system, especially with the Super Bowl coming up. “
