Yellow alert in Delhi after six consecutive days of heat wave, possible monsoon on June 27

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, warning of heatwave conditions in isolated places. Many areas in the national capital experienced a heatwave yesterday for the sixth day in a row.

The lack of strong western disturbances as well as dry and hot westerly winds have been identified as contributing factors for heat waves. At the Sports Complex, the maximum temperature spiked to 46.6 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest place in the city.

Four of the city’s 11 weather stations have recorded heatwave conditions, with Najafgarh recording the highest temperature of 46.3 degrees Celsius. It was followed by Mungeshpur, Pitampura and Ridge stations, respectively. are 46.2, 45.7 and 45.2 degrees Celsius.

Delhi’s base station, the Safdarjung Observatory, recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal.

Weather experts have attributed the heatwave to the absence of strong disturbances in the west and continued hot, dry westerly winds.

These weather conditions could lead to “moderate” health concerns for vulnerable populations, i.e. children, the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions, the IMD said. It also advises that there is “an increased likelihood of heat illness symptoms in people exposed to the sun for long periods of time or doing strenuous work.”

Such people should therefore avoid heat exposure, wear loose, light, light-colored cotton clothing and cover their heads with a piece of cloth, hat or umbrella, it said.

The department also predicts that there is a chance that the city’s maximum temperature will drop to 40-41 degrees Celsius on Friday.

The city will receive a respite from the heat on June 15 when the monsoon is expected to cover eastern India. Easter winds are forecast to bring moisture and increase pre-monsoon activity in the northwest parts of the country.

The IMD has forecast the arrival of a monsoon in the capital on June 27.
