WTA Chennai Open: Indian wild card Thandi wins nasty win | Tennis News

CHENNAI: Karman Kaur Thandi lighting up the opening day of WTA Chennai Open here at SDAT Stadium when she beat the 8th seed Chloe Paquet in three sets of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in an encounter that lasted 2 hours and 35 minutes.
Karman, a wild card for this tournament, displayed a never-say-die attitude throughout the competition. Despite losing in the opening set 6-4, the 24-year-old from Delhi showed the will to fight. The turning point of the match came in game 7 of the second set when she broke the French to a 4-3 lead in that set. She kept her serve in the next game and went on to win the set in the 10th game of the second set.
When the competition came to a decisive point, it was Paquet who broke early and led the set 2-0. However, Karman once again showed his mettle by not only breaking his opponent’s serve in the third game but also continuing to serve in the fourth game. Since that time, it is Karman all the way. Karman was a completely different player from the fifth game of the third set as she sealed the 6-3 deal.
She landed first and hit the lane only when it mattered, which earned her the biggest win of her career. “This win means a lot,” she said after the match. “It was a mental battle and I’m glad I was able to get through it,” Thandi said.
While the second half of the evening belonged to the 24-year-old Canadian player, the Canadian. Eugenie Bouchard gave the event much-needed momentum as she won her first match of the day 7-6 (4), 6-2 before Joanne Zuger. The encounter saw the 28-year-old Canadian being tested by an opponent from Switzerland in the opening set. But when she won the first set in the tie-breaker, Genie found her chance to finally close the deal in 1 hour 44 minutes.
Genie, a wildcard in this league on the verge of a comeback from a shoulder injury in 2021, had a tough first set. She was broken by Zuger in her first match. However, the 2014 Wimbledon finalist broke Zuger in the next set and soon took a 4-1 lead. Zuger stayed in that set by winning the next three games when the first set was read 4-4.
The first set went to a tie-break as Eugenie was the one to raise his game in bends to end the game 7-4. The second set saw Eugenie read terms ahead of her 21-year-old opponent and get a much-needed break in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. She took the serve in game 6 and again broke Zuger in game 7 to take a 5-2 lead. Unlike the first set where she gave her opponent an advantage, Genie played more clinically and finished the match 6-2.
Genie admits that she’s not at her best during the clash. “I tried to focus and fight again. It took a while to get rid of the rust. I think it will take a while for me to get back into shape. At first, I was disappointed that I didn’t hit the mark. I’m still looking for consistency. It’s a work in progress,” said the Canadian. It was Genie’s first major WTA tour win since last year’s Abierto Zapopan tournament in Mexico, where she finished second. During that tournament, Bouchard suffered a shoulder injury that kept her away from the sport for about 17 months. She returned to compete before the US Open but failed to qualify. Bouchard said staying away from tennis for long periods of time frustrated him. “The tennis breakup really tested my patience. It was a long process and I’ve never done it before. But I never wanted to stop. It was just the beginning. for my comeback and hopefully I’ll have many years on the Tour,” she said.
Genie feels that she has handled the wet conditions well. “I got here a bit early for the tournament because I was worried about jet lag. It’s very humid here and I usually sweat a lot. Dealing with the conditions is the biggest challenge. I live and train. I’ve been training in Florida so I’m used to the humidity but the weather in Chennai is different. I needed seven towels and had to store them in different corners of the field. I also changed a few headbands,” she said.
