Wiesmann committed to V-8 sports cars despite switching to EVs

The unique German performer brand Wiesmann returned earlier this year with new ownership, plus a new focus on electric mobility with the reveal of Project Thunderball electric sports car.

Still, the company hasn’t given up on its gas-powered sports car heritage. In fact, they are working on a new sports car powered by a BMW V-8 engine, which is currently doing the rounds under the codename Project Gecko.

An early prototype for Project Gecko was discovered in 2019 and for now the car, which could be called the MF6, is expected to launch later this year.

The car will have the same Jaguar XK140-inspired exterior design as the previous Wiesmanns but will benefit from a newly developed lightweight platform that ensures a 50:50 weight distribution.

The platform is said to be a version of the aluminum space chassis that underpins the Project Thunderball EV. Even with the heavy battery pack, the electric sports car weighs less than 3,750 pounds. This means that Project Gecko has to be lightweight.

In Project Gecko, the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 will sit only in the front and drive only the rear wheels. Peak power is expected to be 600 hp.

The interior will also see a huge step up in quality and refinement over previous Wiesmanns, if Project Thunderball’s cabin is anything to go by. The latest technology is also required, including digital displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment center.

“[Project Gecko] Roheen Berry, Wiesmann’s current owner, said in a statement. “Like every Wiesmann, it will leave you speechless.”
