Which industries and stocks have the highest inflow of domestic investors in 2022 so far?

Top stocks with gains mutual fund holdings for the first 6 months of 22 were Gland Pharma, Bandhan Bank, SBI Cards, Tech Mahindra and Ultratech Cement, shows data analyzed by ICICI Securities. Input line DII has been relatively strong in the current year so far (CY22TD).

Meanwhile, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), Tata Steel, Tata Consumer, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) and UPL were among the stocks that saw MF holdings decline during the same period.

DII and MF buying has corrected in the second half of the year to around $700 million – $800 million so far (as of Aug 30, 2022). Cash flow into MF programs continues although volatility in monthly systematic investment plan (SIP) inflows continues to exceed 120 billion. Equity assets MF under management (AUM) stands at about 21 million as of July 2022.

On the other hand, foreign portfolio investors (FPI) have turned to be net buyers on the Indian stock market for two consecutive months. Until the beginning of July, foreign investors have been selling shares in the Indian market for the past 9-10 months due to various reasons.

The purchase of FPI in H2CY22 (until August 15, 2022) has been driven by domestic economic sectors such as discretionary consumption, finance, industry, FMCG and telecommunications. However, sectors driven by global factors such as oil and gas, IT and metals have been sold off by FPIs.

FPIs turned to net buying for the first time in July, after nine consecutive months of large net outflows, which began in October last year. From October 2021 to June 2022, they sold a large amount 2.46 lakh crore on the Indian stock market.

The recent return of foreign investments coupled with seemingly stabilizing global inflation has helped the Indian stock market recover throughout the past month. The recent rise in stock indexes has helped to restore the full range of losses investors have suffered so far in 2022.
