In this study, MacKenzie Trupp, PhD, Matthew Pelowski of the Art and Research group of Individual and Social Transformation, and their colleagues from the Department of Psychology and the Max Institute of Psychology Planck asked the participants visit art galleries accessible through smartphones, tablets and computers.
Before and after the visit, psychological state and well-being were measured to determine the extent to which viewing the artwork could be beneficial.
The results show that even very brief glances can have a significant impact, leading to lower negative mood, anxiety and loneliness and higher subjective well-being. These results are comparable to other interventions, such as experiencing nature and visiting physical art galleries.
Upon further investigation, the individual subjective experiences of individuals become an important aspect to consider. The research team found that the more beautiful or meaningful people see the artwork and the more positive emotions they have when they see itthe greater the benefit.
Summary
These results demonstrate that viewing brief online artworks can improve and support health. In addition, this study highlights artistic interventions—a recommendation that can be made on-site or specific to the individual viewer. This opens new avenues for further research and applications in spaces such as waiting rooms, hospitals and rural areas with limited access to art.
