The Queen’s Tears for the Dead War: Fields of Remembrance

A minute of silence was observed after the king, dressed entirely in black, placed a modest wooden cross among others in the customary Field of Remembrance. She seemed to be wiping her tears in silence.

The field of memorial honors the British Commonwealth and war dead. The monarch was able to control his emotions before leaving the churchyard to salute the soldiers and look at some of the 19,000 crosses that had been sent from around the country. The planting of the cross had been performed by Elizabeth’s mother, Queen Elizabeth, for most of the previous 50 years.
