When should I take the new bivalent booster?

In August, the Food and Drug Administration allowed up-to-date booster shots for people at least two months after their last Covid shot (whether it was the original vaccine or not. booster vaccine). However, you may want to wait longer between shots. While an advisory panel for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention voted to recommend the same interval between doses, some members expressed concern.

Doctors and immunologists say that, in general, people should wait 4 to 6 months after getting vaccinated to get a booster shot. Likewise, if you have recently been infected with coronavirus, you may want to wait a similar amount of time before getting another shot.

That’s because your body probably won’t produce much of an immune response immediately after a previous encounter with the virus, says Aubree Gordon, an epidemiologist at the University of Michigan. “Your immunity level is so high that you instantly neutralize the antigen that’s being produced – you’ve hit the ceiling,” she says. “You don’t have much higher to go.”

And remember that once you get your new booster, it usually takes about one to two weeks for your antibodies to work, says Dr. Gordon.
