Wheat planted area increased by 5.36% in 2 months of Rabi . season

Wheat planted area has increased by 5.36% annually to 211.62 lakh hectares in the first two months of the ongoing rabi (winter) season, with higher coverage reported in Rajasthan, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture released today.

Sowing of wheat, the main rabi crop, begins in October and harvests in March-April. Besides wheat, rice and legumes such as gram, urad as well as oilseeds such as peanuts and mustard also planted during this season.

According to the latest data from the ministry, so far, wheat has been sown at 211.62 lakh hectares in the current rabi season compared to 200.85 lakh hectares in the previous year period.

Higher acreage was sown in Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Punjab.

Rice cultivation area increased slightly to 10.62 thousand hectares on December 2 of the ongoing rabi season compared to 9.53 thousand hectares in the same period last year.

The pulse area also increased slightly to 112.67 lakh ha on December 2 of the current rabi season from 108.57 lakh ha in the previous year period.

Gram is the main type of pulse grown during the rabi season and its area has increased slightly to 79.82 lakh ha from 75.80 lakh ha in the same period last year.

For coarse grains, the area has increased to 32.63 thousand hectares compared with 29.02 thousand hectares in the same period last year.

Similarly, the area sown with oilseeds has increased to 83.07 thousand hectares compared with 75.55 thousand hectares in the same period last year. The data show that rapeseed is the main oilseed grown during the rabi season, the area has increased to 76.69 thousand hectares from 69.32 thousand hectares in the same period.

Total planted area for all rabi crops remained higher at 450.61 lakh hectares on 2nd December of the ongoing rabi season compared to 423.52 lakh hectares in the same period last year
