West Bengal: 4 US returnees test positive for Omicron sub-variant BF.7


The West Bengal Department of Health announced on Wednesday that four travelers returning from the United States have tested positive for the Omicron sub-variant of Covid-19 BF.7. The sub-variant is believed to be responsible for the sudden increase in Covid cases in the US and China.

India on Wednesday reported 175 new infections Covid-19 infections, bringing the total number of activities to 2,570. Recently, four cases of variant BF.7, responsible for the recent spike in infections in China, were reported from India.

Wednesday’s addition brings the total number of BF.7 infections in India to a total of eight.

Several Omicron variants are currently circulating in India and these include XBB, a combination of BA.2.75 and BJ.1., and BA.2.75, BQ.1, BA.2 (which is the variant that makes up the prevailed in January-February and caused a large increase in infections across the country)

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday said China’s recent Covid-19 outbreak was mainly led by subvariables Omicron. BA.5.2 and BF.7together accounted for 97.5% of the total number of local infections.

The data is based on an analysis of more than 2,000 genomes by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the WHO said.

According to INSACOG, the dominant variants in India are XBB and BA.2.75.

XBB and its affiliates account for 56% of Covid cases in the country. The main symptoms associated with the variant are runny nose, sore throat, fever, and headache.

Meanwhile, the sub-variant BA.2.75 of omicron currently accounts for 44% of infections. However, it was one of the most circulating CovidD variants in the 5 months from July. Its symptoms include cough, cold, fever, stuffy nose, sore throat, and fatigue.
