Look – there comes a time in everyone’s life when they find themselves transforming into a full-fledged adult. Usually, it happens without warning: One day you’re closing down a bar to watch the sunrise, the next time you’ll be exchanging advice with your friend on the ideal ways to stay healthy. Keep your dishwasher clean.
My personal reckoning comes when I find myself unable to stop praising the silicone baking mats. I can’t recommend them enough, and with that, I have to accept that I’m not at my peak anymore.
Carpets are available in one and two packs as well as a variety of sizes and colors.
These rugs are Available in various brands, colors, shapes and sizesbut MMmat . silicone baking mat orange is a product that I have been using for the past two years. I double them with my cutting board and will guess I use them at least five times a week.
So what’s so great about these fragile little things? I’d say their biggest benefit is that they make disposable parchment and tinfoil almost useless. Before these mats, I used to tear off a new piece of aluminum foil every time I put something in the oven. From leftover pizza to undercooked salmon, cookie dough to vegetables soaked in olive oil, every food gets a new foil to separate it from the baking sheet.
While I’m sure baking sheets are meant to be cleaned regularly, this isn’t something that happens with reliable certainty in my household. Our sheets were full of burn marks and sometimes had oily residue even after washing them in the dishwasher. Cooking with the silicone baking mat, which is – praise the strength – is dishwasher safe, makes me confident that whatever food I am working on won’t be contaminated by what’s left on the mat. I can also be sure that the mat will keep the baking sheet from getting dirty.
The silicone sheets can withstand oven temperatures of up to 500 degrees F and are also freezer safe. They are really non-stick and extremely easy to clean. I haven’t tried this move yet, but some reviewers say they use sheets to line the fridge – they’ll definitely stay in place – to keep everything perfect.
Buying something new is rarely the best option when it comes to practicing sustainability. But I believe these are worth buying as they greatly cut down on the need for single-use pads.
Like I mentioned earlier, I’ve had my properties for two years now, and I see them going for many more years. One way to make sure they last is to avoid cutting directly on top of them, as sharp knives can cut into the silicone and eventually tear a hole.
While throwing away foil is hardly our biggest environmental offense in the kitchen (and indeed, recyclable aluminum foil in many cities if you get it right), these reusable sheets are a win in our book when it comes to making small changes to cut waste.
