Way of Water Runtime Sails Through Three Hours – The Hollywood Reporter

Be prepared for a long soak.

By James Cameron Avatar: The Road of Water has a runtime that matches the 13-year wait for the sequel, around three hours and 10 minutes, sources say The Hollywood Reporter.

Avatar 2 hopes to join an elite club of longer-running Hollywood actors who have been in the blockbuster business in theaters, including Avengers: Endgame (three hours and 2 minutes) and Cameron’s Titanic (three hours and 14 minutes). The two films ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively on Comscore’s list of the highest-grossing films of all time at the worldwide box office, unadjusted for inflation.

Cameron’s original Avatar, released in December 2009, remained at number 1 throughout the following years. That movie is about 29 minutes shorter than the sequel, or two hours and 41 minutes.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, longer films, with many shots of a Hollywood event lasting more than two hours and 30 minutes are, by traditional standards, considered long. (The one exception is Sony’s box office sensation Spider-Man: There is no way homeappears just below the line at 2:28pm.)

This trend will continue throughout the rest of the year. December tent Babylonfrom Paramount and filmmaker Damien Chazelle, running at least three hours, insiders said CHEAP. And Marvel and Disney’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which opens on November 11, is two hours and 41 minutes. Matt Reeves’ Batmanwas released earlier this year, running for two hours and 55 minutes.

The running time of a movie, including credits, can be up to 10 minutes.

20th century and Disney, home of The path of water, has yet to release an official runtime for the sequel, but the film’s length has already begun to leak as it receives official ratings. (In the US, the film is rated PG-13.) Some theaters have unintentionally listed the runtime on their websites when posting ratings.

Disney, the successor company Avatar franchise upon purchase of 20th Century Fox, declined to comment.

In early September, Cameron arrived from New Zealand at D23 to showcase half a dozen scenes from The path of water, which the filmmaker also produced with his longtime Lightstorm partner Jon Landau. Stars Zoe Saldaña, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang were present at the conference. Much of the footage shows Cameron’s underwater work.

Not long after D23, Disney and 20th Century released a remake of the first version Avatar to attract the audience for the sequel. The re-release has grossed an impressive $76 million at the global box office, bringing the film’s current total to more than $2.92 billion.

Water way focuses again on Worthington’s Sully and Saldaña’s Na’vi character, Neytiri. It begins a decade after the original and follows their family, with additional stars, including franchise newcomers Vin Diesel and Kate Winslet.

Avatar: The Road of Water premieres in North America on December 16, as of the time of its global release.
