Waiver of Novak Djokovic’s visa ban would be ‘slap in the face’ for Australia: Former minister | Tennis News

MELBOURNE: Giving up Novak Djokovicvisa ban to let him play Australian Open would be a ‘slap in the face’ to Australians who have been vaccinated for COVID-19Opposition lawmaker and former Home Secretary Karen Andrews said on Monday.
Serbian Djokovic expelled from Australia lead the Grand Slam in January for refusing to be vaccinated.
The former world number one is banned from entering the country until 2025 but may be granted a three-year visa waiver by the government.
In July, Australia scrapped a rule requiring international travelers to declare their COVID vaccination status, and Djokovic said he was hoping for “positive news” about next year’s attempt to compete at the Australian Open. .
However, the rule change will not be relevant to Djokovic’s case, Andrews said.
“There will be other people in similar circumstances who also have their visas canceled,” the lawmaker told ABC Radio on Monday.
“So if immigration now chooses to set aside a special allowance for Novak Djokovic, the obvious question is what will they do with anyone else who might be in a similar situation?”
No comment was immediately available from Djokovic. Australia’s Department of Home Affairs reiterated that it does not comment on individual cases.
Andrews said lifting Djokovic’s ban would be a “slap in the face to the people in Australia who did the right thing (and) got vaccinated.”
“(Why should) Novak Djokovic be allowed to return home simply because he has a high ranking tennis players with millions of dollars? “, She added.
“It shouldn’t be just one rule for (him) and another for everyone else.”
Djokovic, a nine-time Australian Open champion, was unable to travel to New York for the US Open recently because he was unvaccinated but said he has no regrets missing out on two of the year’s four Grand Slams.
