Volvo P1800 Cyan Races To Jay Leno’s Garage


The Volvo P1800 Cyan Restomod first shown in 2020 recently appeared on “Jay Leno’s Garage,” with Cyan Racing CEO Hans Bååth explaining the details and contents of the build.

This car started as a 1964 Volvo P1800 and was delivered to Cyan Racing, the Swedish racing team formerly known as Polestar, before Volvo reassigned that name to the current EV brand. The project actually originated in 2017 as a way to celebrate the recent world championship and the sale of the company’s road car division to Volvo, Bååth said.

Extended modifications start with the body. In the video, Bååth said some of the original steel monolithic sections were retained, but with reinforcements to address the lack of structural stiffness of the P1800 stock, adding that some steels are Modern formulas weren’t available in the 1960s. And the bodywork is made of carbon fiber, which helps keep the weight below 2,200 lbs. For example, the track is widened and the wheels move closer to the corners for better proportions. And a fuel cell currently exists in the trunk.

Cyan Racing also replaced the stock 1.8-liter turbo-4 with a modern 2.0-liter turbo-4 from the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) racing engine, producing 420 horsepower. and 336 lb-ft of torque. It’s housed in a very clean-looking engine bay, with the turbo located below the exhaust. It’s emblematic of the driving characteristics that Cyan Racing aims for, says Bååth, as the goal is to make the powertrain feel naturally aspirated.

The relatively compact engine also allows for 47/53 front/rear weight distribution and rear wheel drive via a manual transmission. The 5-speed manual from Australian company Holinger has been selected specifically for its mechanical feel, says Bååth.

Feeling prioritized here, over lap time. Engineers could have done a few things to make the P1800 faster, but the focus is on making it fun, Bååth said. The P1800 lacks traction control, anti-lock brakes and brake assist, but for added convenience it has electric power steering. That helps with parking maneuvers, Bååth noted.

Cyan Racing built this car only once, but it now went to production. Cyan Racing is accepting orders, but customers will have to pay at least $700,000 for one. So, if you like what you see here, start planning a bank robbery.
