Verstappen crowned 2022 F1 World Champion at Japanese Grand Prix

Max Verstappen was named the 2022 Formula One World Champion on Sunday after winning the rain-affected Japanese Grand Prix, held at Suzuka Circuit.

That means the Red Bull Racing driver is now a double world champion, with his first title coming in 2021 after a year. The controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. And impressive is that the second title, like the first, comes in a season where Verstappen has not always had the fastest car.

With a leading score in the 2022 Drivers’ Championship, Verstappen will surely finally score the title. However, it came a little earlier than expected after Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who was on course to finish in second in Japan and as a result Verstappen slowed his title, over through a complicated bend and was penalized for five seconds. he comes Tuesday. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was then promoted to second.

Despite heavy rain, the race started as usual, with Verstappen on the post and Leclerc also in front of the net. However, after two laps and a series of incidents including Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Williams’ Alexander Albon both spinning and plunging from the start, the race was hit with red flags.

After a long delay, the race was finally resumed with a rolling start but only 50 minutes remained. Given the exhausting conditions, many drivers opted to pit for intermediate drivers, including race leaders Verstappen and Leclerc around lap seven, with Verstappen emerging fourth and Leclerc sixth.

One lap later, Verstappen overcame Haas’ Mick Schumacher to take the lead, while Leclerc overtook Alfa Romeo’s Guanyu Zhou to finish fourth. Leclerc eventually climbed to second in the ninth lap but then Verstappen had a pretty big gap so just kept going up.

Perez also managed to catch up to Leclerc, who was trying to defend second place having come across a bend on the final lap, which resulted in the Ferrari driver being penalized. Alpine’s Esteban Ocon is fourth after edging out Mercedes-Benz AMG’s Lewis Hamilton who is fifth. One person worth mentioning is Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel, who recovered from his opening round clash with Fernando. Alpine’s Alonso to finish sixth.

After the weekend’s action, Verstappen currently has an unbeatable lead in the 2022 Drivers’ Championship with 366 points. However, the battle for second place is still very intense, with Perez now second with 253 points and Leclerc third with 252 points. The battle for Constructors’ championship is also still alive, albeit sparingly, with Red Bull picking up 619 points, compared with Ferrari’s 454 and Mercedes’ 387.

The next race on the calendar is the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, in two weeks.
