UNSC requires urgent and comprehensive reforms: MEA in joint statement


In a joint foreign ministry statement, the United Nations called for urgent and comprehensive reform, stressing that the Security Council must reflect “the aspirations and views of the developing world” which is member of the majority of the global members of the United Nations. .

While declaring that the UNSC is the principal organization for international peace and security, the joint signatories in the declaration reaffirmed that bringing the United Nations into line with modern world realities necessarily requires urgent and comprehensive reform of the Security Council.

The heads of the delegation were convinced of the need to restore faith in effective multilateralism and declared, “we are united, as a group of like-minded States for reform. , determined to move towards a more inclusive, responsive and participatory international governance structure,”

The statement read: “We also recognize that the lack of progress on Security Council reform has serious implications, not only for the continued relevance of global governance institutions, but also for to global peace and security and to fulfill the purposes, principles and promises of the United Nations.

The head of the delegation stressed that the reformed Security Council should better reflect the current membership of the United Nations, including through increased representation of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). , which accounts for about 20% of the UN membership.

The Delegation reiterated that the expansion of the Security Council into both permanent and non-permanent categories, as well as reform of its working methods, are essential to making it legitimacy and representative. and more efficient.

“We reaffirm our support for Africa’s representation in line with Africa’s Common Status, as outlined in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration,”

“We are committed to ‘creating new life’ efforts during the 77th session of the General Assembly, and urgently call on all Member States of the United Nations to join hands to achieve a reform comprehensive Security Council,”

The Delegation felt the need for a formal negotiation process, guided by the decision-making and working methods enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and in accordance with the rules and procedures of the UN General Assembly. Council.
