Timothée Chalamet Has Entered His Post-Swag Era
It’s not a secret Timothée Chalamet easily one of Hollywood’s most fashion-savvy young stars. Even when he yes wearing a shirt at this year’s Oscars, the biggest pre-show story of the night probably still revolved around Chalamet’s costume. In an unpredictable and brilliant move, he wearing a sequined blazer by Louis Vuitton women’s fashion designer Nicolas Ghesquière, who has dressed generations of stylish girls around the world. It feels like the culmination of Chalamet’s rise as one of the most devoted fashion enthusiasts of our time, a journey that has sparked memorable collaborations with Stella McCartneyDesigners become artists Sterling RubySarah Burton’s Alexander McQueenand the late Virgil Abloh. He’s not just wearing outfits that match the meme – he’s deepening his bond and appreciating fashion’s hottest minds.
That makes the clothes Chalamet wears outside of the photos all the more interesting.
At last weekend’s edition of Coachella, which became such a niche magazine that, it created its own “festival style” genre, Chalamet appeared as casual as possible. One day, he wear black combat boots, slim Prada Linea Rossa running pants, large white Supreme t-shirt and a faded Chelsea FC hat. The only indication that he might be a celebrity, rather than the PA for the seventh famous member of Brockhampton, are his Cartier glasses and diamond ring. (He’s been a “friend of the house” since last year.) Other suitable, the outfit he wore to the influencer festival known as the Revolve Festival, was a bit flashy and a bit sloppy: along with a hat and similar color scheme, Chalamet donned an Encore patterned t-shirt. Records, flame-shaped basketball shorts, and cooked Chuck White Taylors. A nice outfit if you’re a pledger to the USC fraternity, and a funny one if you’re Timmy Chalamet, whose dangerously close to wearing the last of the ironic ensembles: the shirt Guy Fieri’s infamous fire shirt.

Elsewhere, Chalamet looked more like a Gallatin student on a hungry bagel jog. He tends to wear slim pants and what I call the Sneakers — ersatz versions of classic designs, like these Tretorn turtlenecks. He also loves loose hoodies and is often photographed wearing light outerwear such as windbreakers, jackets and nylon cases. His graphic t-shirt collection rival of any high school student in the greater New York metropolitan area. Obviously there’s nothing wrong with Chalamet’s matches. As most of us have been reminded during the pandemic, casual clothes are great. His style isn’t basic, or worse, trying – it’s simply random. Call it Timmy’s post-swag era.
This puts him in a class of his own. Most hot, young celebrities tend to embrace striking fashion as soon as the paparazzi start tracking their every move. When Jacob Elordi appeared on Euphoria, his Australian surfer’s wardrobe was completely gone. Celine-ified overnight. Ashton Sanders, possibly one of the only young actors more obsessed with fashion than Chalamet, has some eccentric and unique personal style Not just in Hollywood but anywhere.
It’s not like Chalamet doesn’t know exactly what he’s doing, in style: Remember, here’s the guy, as soon as he can be dressed up in the clothes of any luxury house on the planet, became an acolyte of menswear’s great secret romanticist Haider Ackermann (who calls Timmy his “little brother”). Who has developed a friendship with Abloh, and wears some Bold original design for Louis Vuitton Men’s back when the establishment was still uncertain about what to do with the late designer’s first collections for the home. Who did all that, proudly, without a stylist. Chalamet has proven he’s adept at sending visual messages. So what makes his post-swag era?
