This Nissan Sunny Truck has Leaf’s electric powertrain

Nissan will probably have one of the coolest cars at the upcoming 2022 SEMA show in Las Vegas.

The automaker will introduce a 1987 Datsun Sunny truck whose original powertrain has been replaced for a one . solenoid setup Nissan Leaf. Ford had a similar concept based on a 1978 F-100 pickup at the 2021 SEMA show and Chevy already has one based on a C-10 . pickup at the 2019 exhibition.

The Leaf’s electric powertrain consists of a single motor that makes 147 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. That’s about twice the power and three times the torque of the original 4-cylinder Sunny Truck.

The build also packs the Leaf’s standard 40 kWh battery, of which the lightweight Sunny Truck can provide a range beyond the Leaf’s 149 miles. Nissan did not provide an estimate.

Nissan has never sold the Sunny Truck in the US This vehicle is of Japanese origin, hence the right-drive configuration.

The truck belonged to Tommy Pike, owner of Tommy Pike Customs based in South Carolina, and he and his team of mechanics handled the conversion. He paired the electric motor with a manual transmission, a move that required a custom electric bell converter. He also fitted a custom drive shaft and a custom aluminum box for the battery.

Nissan fans of a certain age will immediately recognize the color combination that Pike applies to its pickup. It is inspired by the livery material used on Baja racers made by Brock Racing Enterprises in the late 60s and early 70s.

This year’s SEMA show is scheduled to run from November 1 to 4. Nissan will also use the program to showcase Race car Z GT4 and a Z with Nismo . Accessories.
