The most effective workout skin care routine for before and after you exercise

As it turns out, exercise can also help you have healthier skin. “Exercise helps maintain your weight, lifts your overall mood and self-esteem, and motivates you to eat healthier,” says Dr. Shereen Idrissfounder of Dermatologist Idriss in New York City and creator #pillowtalkderm series on Instagram. “All of these things can do wonders for your skin.”

However, how you take care of your skin before and after your workout makes all the difference. According to Idriss, not cleaning the skin after exercise “can lead to clogging of the pores, leading to inflammation, leading to acne and breakouts, and generally a broken skin barrier.” .

Sweat is the biggest culprit when it comes to post-workout skin concerns. “When you’re exercising, sweat, oil, and bacteria can lead to blockages and breakouts if you don’t remove them,” says Idriss. “Also, if you’re working out at the gym, you’re also coming into contact with other people’s sweat and bacteria, so a good wash afterwards is essential to keep your skin healthy. You are healthy, bright and smooth.”

Fortunately, in addition to a few skin care steps before and after you work out – with products you might already be using in the morning or at night – making pre- and post-workout skin care easy to add to your gym bag.

Skin care routine before exercise

Because SPF – a must whether you’re working out indoors or outdoors – she recommends Supergoop’s Play Everyday Lotion SPF 50Water and sweat resistant.

If you exercise later in the day, Idriss notes that you should remove your makeup first. “If you’re working out with makeup on, that’s a huge deal because you’ll not only be clogging your pores with all the makeup, but you’ll also be sweating through it, because so it will she said. “Sweat mixed with makeup is obviously much more harmful to your skin, so take it off.”

If you have access to a changing room or bathroom where you can use detergent, use it, otherwise, makeup remover wipes will work efficiently. The Burts Bee’s Sensitive Facial Towelettes with Aloe Gentle and non-irritating.

Post-workout skin care routine

“What products you put on your skin after a workout depends on what time of day you exercise,” says Darden. “In the morning, track your AM routine, if working at night, follow your PM routine.”

Either way, however, cleaning the skin is important. After working up a sweat, Darden recommends “follow-up with a gentle cleanser to remove sweat, dirt, and bacteria.”

The ideal option is to shower right after exercising, so you can wash away sweat from your entire body, but in cases where that’s not an option, Darden recommends using it. micellar water and a cotton pad. At a minimum, wash your face with water, Idriss says, “just to make sure you’re removing any residue that’s built up on your face.”

After you’ve washed away the sweat, you can continue with your day or night skin care routine. If you go to the gym and don’t carry a full range of skin care products with you, experts recommend keeping the following essentials in your gym bag.
