Police said on Thursday that a woman had been arrested for allegedly drowning five newborn puppies in a pond.
The police recovered the puppies’ bodies and sent them to an autopsy.
(Rural) Police Superintendent Siddharth Verma said a case has been registered against Anita Devi and her husband Suryakant alias Bhura under the Animal Cruelty Prevention Act 1860 and Section 429 (naughty by killing or injuring animals) by the IPC on a complaint by neighbor Vibhor Sharma.
According to police, a woman allegedly threw one-day-old puppies into a pond in Basai village in the district’s Bisauli police station area at dawn on Thursday, killing them.
Upon receiving information about the incident, animal activists went to the scene and informed the police.
On November 25, a man was fined here for killing a rat by drowning it in a drain.
A forensic examination of the rodents later confirmed that the rat died of suffocation due to a lung infection.
