Some users even think it’s a new feature Apple was rolled out for iOS 16. Well, that’s not the case Instagram Stories sound cannot be played when iPhone is in silent mode. This issue was later determined to be a bug and Instagram has begun rolling out a fix to mitigate the problem.
How Instagram Stories on iOS should work
Normally, when iPhone users put their devices on silent and start checking Instagram Stories, the app mutes Stories by default. If they want, users can override that setting and access the audio in Stories by tapping the story once (tapping the story twice can mute it again) or by increasing the sound with the button volume adjustment.
With this new bug, Instagram Stories starts playing sound by default even when iPhone is in silent mode. After installing the new app update, users will find that Instagram Stories is back to normal working as mentioned above.
Instagram’s response to this bug
As reported by 9to5Mac, a Meta A spokesperson has addressed the issue as an iOS bug and has confirmed that the latest update to the Instagram app will fix the issue. “This issue has been resolved with the latest version of Instagram for iOS – please update to the latest version of the app available in the App Store,” the spokesperson said. This means that iPhone users who are still facing sound issues on Instagram Stories just need to update their app to get rid of this issue.
Why are Instagram users confusing this bug as a feature
Instagram Reels play their audio by default, so users think Meta wants Stories to work the same way Reels did. However, it is important to understand the difference between Stories and Instagram Stories.
All Instagram Stories are videos, but Stories can include both videos and images with background sound. Users are expected to play a sound while watching a video, but that may not be the case when they check the image.
