She missed her singles medal after losing her bronze medal match to Australia’s Yangzi Liu in a tough fight 11-3, 6-11, 2-11, 11-7, 13-15 , 11-9, 7-11. The 24-year-old played the whole match without giving up and made the opponent struggle to win every point. The 24-year-old is back in mixed doubles to make history with a gold medal.
The young TT star shared how Sharath Kamal inspired her ahead of the mixed doubles final. she talks about how the unexpected relationship between Sharath Kamal and Sreeja Akula was formed.
“We originally played in 2019 and it was really unexpected because he was supposed to play with Manika Batra, but she got sick in the middle of the tournament. So he enjoyed playing with me because of me and Manika. This is my second time playing with him.After the national championship, my coach asked Sharath bhaiyya to play with me in the Commonwealth Games. And that’s when he agreed and talked to the federation that he wanted to work with me. I feel really lucky to be playing with such a senior player,” Sreeja Akula told ANI.
“Playing with Sharath Kamal was a great experience. He guided me very well throughout the match. He was very friendly. I never felt like I was playing with such a senior player. Because So thank you Sharath for guiding me. He encouraged and supported me to do well during the tournament,” she said.
Asked about her first outing to the Commonwealth Games, 24-year-old Sreeja said she was thoroughly prepared for the multi-sport event.
“Yes, it was my first commonwealth match and I prepared really well before the tournament. I’m glad I played so well. I think it was the best moment of my life. It was my first commonwealth match, so I’m very happy that I played very well in my maiden games The overall experience from the game is really good, not only from the point of view of the game it was the first time playing in a multi-sport event I had a really good time there The international exposure I’ve had over the past two years has helped me a lot in preparing and competing at the Commonwealth Games,” CWG 2022 gold medal.
“Entering CWG, I was very confident and prepared. Sure, I didn’t expect to do so well. I prepared and worked very hard,” she added.
Team TT India finished with seven medals including four golds and was the most successful.
