The 2023 BMW i7 luxury electric sedan promises a capacity of 536 horsepower, a range of 300 km

BMW on Wednesday unveiled a new generation of 7-Seriesand included in the range is an electric variant labeled i7 xDrive60.

It arrives in dealers later this year as a 2023 model and sits at the top of the redesigned 7-Series lineup. Prices are confirmed to start at $120,295, including a $995 destination fee.

The i7 is not a dedicated electric vehicle. Instead, it uses a modified version of BMW Group’s CLAR platform that underpins the entire 7-Series range, and it features a dual-engine all-wheel drive setup as standard. For its electric powertrain, BMW integrates the transmission, motor and inverter in a single transmission, which in the i7 features on each axle. Combined peak power is 536 hp and 549 lb-ft of torque, or enough to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds and a tuned top speed of 149 mph. .

The battery is a lithium-ion type with a capacity of 101.7 kilowatt-hours, which BMW estimates will run for a distance of 300 km after a single charge. Helping to maximize range is an adaptive energy regeneration system that can consider downhill sections and information from traffic light recognition when determining the severity of regeneration. For example, when approaching an intersection, the level of recovery can be increased, even when the navigation system is not in use.

Adaptive reproduction is the default setting, although the driver can also choose a high, medium, or low setting. High settings allow driving with one pedal. Information about the power flow is displayed on the infotainment screen, a 14.9-inch touchscreen is integrated in the same dashboard as the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

A heat pump used to heat and cool the cabin as well as the powertrain also helps increase efficiency, according to BMW. The battery is heated by a dedicated 5.5 kilowatt current heater.

When it finally comes time to charge, the battery supports charging speeds of up to 195 kw. At this rate, you should be able to add about 80 miles of range in about 10 minutes of charging. BMW has also tweaked the charging software to improve speed. As the battery reaches a higher charge, the charging process ensures that the charge rate drops smoothly instead of the typical stepped curve, which according to the automaker creates a more rounded overall charge curve and results. is shorter charging time. The new software also allows for variables such as temperature and charge level when charging is initiated.

Navigation also plays an important role in overall efficiency. It can choose the most efficient route using real-time traffic data transmitted at short intervals combined with predictive models. It can also show specific routes to charge, if it calculates that the current toll is not enough to reach the destination. Important additional information is also included in the route summary, such as the estimated charge on arrival at the charging station, the suggested charging time, and the target charge to which it will originate.

For US buyers, the i7 will come with three years of free charging with Electrify America. The network currently has about 800 stations with 3,500 chargers across the US and Canada, and that number will grow to about 1,800 stations with 10,000 chargers by 2026.
