Tesla’s factory in Germany goes online with the start of Model Y production.

The first customer cars were completed on Tuesday at Tesla’s factory near Berlin, Germany.

CEO Elon Musk visited the factory to mark the event and even performed a little dance, a video posted by Reuters.

The plant, which Tesla calls Giga Berlin, is currently building the Model Y crossover but is expected to add Model 3 sedan production at a later date. At full capacity, the plant will be able to produce 500,000 vehicles and 50 gigawatt-hours of batteries per year.

Tesla has chosen the location in 2019 was the first car factory in Europe. But while the project was quickly followed by the German bureaucracy, Tesla was met with resistance from local environmental groups. Their concerns, coupled with licensing delays, caused the factory to open for another eight months and two protesters blocked traffic after the opening event, according to Reuters.

Tesla’s original Fremont, California, plant continues to build Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y, while the plant near Reno, Nevada, makes battery packs and other components. A newly completed factory near Austin, Texas, will initially focus on Model Y production (with Tesla’s new 4680 pin-cell format) but also be devoted to building the Cybertruck, with the start of Production is currently delayed to 2023.

Tesla also has a factory in Shanghai to manufacture Model 3 and Model Y, and is said to be considering a second Chinese factory. The factory will be located near the existing factory, located in the Lingang free trade zone in the south of Shanghai. However, Tesla has not publicly confirmed plans for a second factory or hinted at what models might be produced there. The China plant is currently Tesla’s largest, accounting for more than half of Tesla’s record 936,000 vehicles delivered in 2021.
