Teachers of Dorchester Co. accused of using derogatory terms, organizing cotton picking exercise


LADSON, SC (WCSC) – A Dorchester District 2 mother is looking for answers after she said her son’s teacher used derogatory words to describe another teacher – and arrested her son. she participated in the cotton picking exercise.

Lashanda Wiggins’ son attends Oakbrook Middle School. She said something his teacher supposedly said a few weeks ago annoyed her.

“His teacher made some comments that she had a teacher next door, he was a Black teacher, and she called him ‘the monkey next door,'” Wiggins said. .

Her son said that right after those comments, the teacher had the whole class perform cotton picking activity.

“What the vice-principal explained to me was that she would just bring in the cotton, give it to the kids, and her words were, ‘This is how you pick the cotton,’” says Wiggins.

Wiggins said her son was upset.

“He wants to know why do we have to rewind that or why do we have to go back to that?” she speaks.

Wiggins said that the principal acknowledged what happened but she was not provided with other answers about any kind of consequences.

“I send my kids to school to learn,” says Wiggins. “They must be treated equally between their peers and those responsible for teaching them. So when he came home and told me I was extremely and still extremely upset.”

The district responded to a request for comment with the following statement:

Dorchester School District Two takes all allegations seriously. We are currently investigating an alleged incident at Oakbrook Middle School. We do not comment on personnel matters.
