BMW’s X2 compact crossover is a great alternative to premium hatchbacks commonly found outside the United States, due to its compact size combined with a high seating position and higher ground clearance. It’s a new addition to the lineup here for 2018, and a redesigned version is coming soon.
A prototype for the next-generation X2 has been spotted again and hints at a more coupe-like design than the current generation with a sloping roofline. Other details such as the headlights and grille are similar to the design on the redesigned version BMW X1 2023that the vehicle’s platform shares.
That platform is the latest version of the BMW Group’s FAAR platform for front-wheel drive vehicles. We know the new X1 is longer and wider than the model it replaces, and the same could be true of the new X2.
The interior design should match the interior of the new X1, likewise the interior design should match the interior of the latest X1 2-Series Active Tourer sold abroad. No more traditional hood on the instrument cluster. Instead, the instrument cluster stands independently as a floating screen and connects to a second screen for the infotainment system. The traditional vertical shift lever has also been replaced by a small gear lever integrated in the extension of the center armrest.

The X2 is currently available in the US in X2 xDrive28i and X2 M35i trim levels, which come with a 2.0-liter turbo-4 that delivers 228 and 302 hp, respectively. Expect similar grades for the new X2, but perhaps with a small increase in horsepower. The new X1 xDrive28i has been confirmed with 241 hp. It is also confirmed with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, features that will also appear in the new X2.
The current X2 offers the xDrive25e plug-in hybrid overseas, although the jury is still out on whether such an option will be offered on the new X2. It’s also not clear if we’ll see an all-electric iX2, though the new X1 has arrived iX1 electric with 308 horsepower and a range of 250 miles. However, the electric X1 is yet to be confirmed for sale in the US.
Look for the new X2 due out late 2023 or early next year as a 2024 model. Pricing should start in the low $40,000 bracket.
Although there have been rumors of an X2 convertible, such body styling seems to be falling out of favor.
