Smell your way to physical and mental health

The COVID-19 pandemic has redefined the importance of nature in promoting human health and well-being. Previous studies have only partially examined how and why certain aspects of nature (such as noise, color, and scent) affect health.

With this DICE university study, it’s clear that smell plays an important role in the health benefits of being in contact with nature. These benefits are tied to human memory and certain ecological qualities and processes (e.g., leaf fall, winter rotting).

This study, published in Ambio, an Environmental and Social Journal, examines how fragrance affects happiness in nature. The researchers found that Scent affects several aspects of human health. Physical health receives the utmost attention, especially with regard to comfort, relaxation and renewal. The absence of fragrance is also said to promote physical well-being and promote relaxation by creating a fresh atmosphere free of odors and pollutants. These findings are of great significance to public health practitioners because relaxation lowers cortisol levels, which are associated with various disorders.

Research conducted in woodland environments during all four seasons, found that certain fragrances brought back memories of playing time with children. Instead of forests, some participants made meaningful associations with certain smells and associated them with a memorable experience. They concluded that emotional responses to memories positively impact overall health.

Dr. Jessica Fisher, Associate Doctor of Postdoctoral Research at DICE, said, “Nature is a multimodal experience. Our research shows that scent can have health implications. ”

Research findings may be beneficial for promoting happy outcomes through nature. It can guide the work of healthcare practitioners, public health professionals, policy makers and landscape designers. Small initiatives can have a positive impact on public health.
