“Salman Rushdie and his supporters must be held accountable for what happened to him,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said on Monday.
He added: “Freedom of speech does not justify Salman Rushdie’s insults to religion and insults to the religions of the religion.”

The author, 75, was attacked on stage ahead of a speech in New York state on Friday. He underwent many hours of surgery in the hospital and take off the ventilator on saturday.

Sir Salman spent nearly a decade in hiding after publishing his 1988 work The Verses of Satan, which some Muslims consider blasphemous.
A year later, Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of Iran, issued a religious decree calling on Muslims to kill him.
It is reported that the religious leader has never read Sir Salman’s book.
While such decrees could be revoked, Khomeini’s successor supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in late 1989 said the decision on Sir Salman to be fired as a “bullet” would be “sooner or later”. that will hit the target.”
He confirmed that the fatwa was still valid in 2017.
