AHMEDABAD: Murali the long jumper Sreeshankar consider The game of commonwealth silver medal as a “breakthrough” in his career, and said finishing on the podium in Birmingham gave him the perfect impetus to take his achievement to the next level.
Sreeshankar won silver medal in men’s long jump in Birmingham this year CWG with an effort of 8.08m.
He is representing Kerala at National Sports Festival which starts with the table tennis event in Gujarat on Tuesday.
“The season has been a great learning experience for me. I’ve been playing since March and to stay fit until August-September it’s been very difficult to be honest. Move a lot, we I have to adjust to different climates. conditions and then compete with the best in the world,” he said at a virtual press conference Tuesday.
“I had a breakthrough in my career with a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. My rankings have also improved a lot. I was somewhere around the 60’s when the season was around. The tournament is about to start. From here, I have to build, Paris (the Olympics) is only two years away and I’m sure I’ll be able to build from here.”
Sreeshankar said continued appearances at top international events, such as the Diamond Leagues, will be his focus going forward.
“Next season, I hope to be more consistent in the internationals, more often in the Diamond League. To get to the top is very difficult, but I’m sure it can happen with exposure to more international,” he said.
“Asian Games, CWG, National Games, all these competitions are built towards the Paris Olympics. The medals in these events will definitely boost my morale against Paris. I want to keep going. similar dynamics at the Asian Games.”
The 23-year-old long jumper from Palakkad in Kerala is expecting a tough competition in the National Games, especially in the jump events.
“For the diving athlete, the National Games is not a walk. We have three skydivers over 8.15.
“We have to think of each national championship like a world tournament, because it’s very competitive, the domestic round is highly competitive. We have to be at our best,” he said. .
“We’re really excited about the National Games because it’s my first and coming after a long seven years.
“For us, the National Games are just as important as any other major tournament because it’s the biggest sporting event in the country. All athletes will meet at the same venue and Indian Sports Celebration.”
Sreeshankar feels a good performance in the National Games will be of great help to him ahead of next season.
“I am also continuing the same training program for the Asian Games. I believe the consistent form here will help me plan the season better.
“I have my goals, but the most important thing for me here is to enjoy the competition, because the season has been quite long and I want to finish the season well. My body is feeling it. feel very good. priority for this competition,” he said.
