Mumbai:
The rupee rose 18 paise to 82.17 against the US dollar in early Tuesday trading as crude oil prices fell. Foreign exchange traders said the continuous outflow of foreign capital and the weak trend of domestic stocks affected investor sentiment and limited the appreciation trend.
At the interbank exchange rate, the domestic unit opened at 82.20 against the dollar, then rose to 82.17, recording a gain of 18 paise from the previous close.
On Monday, the rupee was steady at 82.35 against the US dollar.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.21% to 103.21.
Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, fell 0.49% to $79.26 a barrel.
In the domestic stock market, BSE Sensex 30 shares traded 353.74 points or 0.58% lower to 60,393.57 points. The broader NSE Nifty fell 82.55 points or 0.46% to 18,018.65 points.
Foreign institutional investors (FII) were net sellers in capital markets on Monday as they sold off shares worth Rs 203.13 crore, according to exchange data.
