Roy Jones Jr: Golovkin has more motivation than Canelo to win this fight

Via Robert Segal: Roy Jones Jr believes Gennadiy Golovkin has more motivation for the three-part showdown with Canelo Alvarez than vice versa as they head into their clash this Saturday, September 17, on the DAZN pay-per- view.

Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) made Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) wait years for this bout, and he clearly had to be persuaded to take it.

Aware that Golovkin was given business rights by judges in Las Vegas during his first two battles with Canelo, and that he wants revenge.

Jones Jr noted that Canelo looked unmotivated for his final bout against WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol last May and didn’t put in much effort to win the competition.

Canelo even abandoned the idea of an immediate rematch with Bivol after initially telling the media that he wanted to do it.

At this point in Canelo’s career, he’s already made millions, and he seems to be more focused on a life of entertainment, enjoying money, and golfing.

“We all think [Canelo will win], but if you stop to think about the motivational factor. GGG has been wanting to play Canelo for the last six or seven years because of the way the first two games went,” said Roy Jones Jr. Fighthype.

“So he tried a little bit to get this right again. Canelo is about to lose money [to Dmitry Bivol]and he doesn’t look necessarily eager to try and win it.

“Speaking of which, where is the guy’s motivation now? Who is the most motivated person right now? Motivation is what keeps you going. Who is the most powerful fighter? Is it GGG? Is it Canelo? Who is motivated to win this war?

“I think GGG is a lot more motivated than the current Canelo. Can he turn that into a winning performance? We don’t know it at 40, but he will try.

“I don’t think Gennadiy has the hatred that Canelo seems to have, and I think Canelo has learned that sometimes showing hate sells for more money per view.

“So I think that’s what he’s doing here. I don’t think it’s real hate,” Jones said explicitly that he believes Canelo is trying to bring in more PPV purchases by telling the media he doesn’t like Golovkin.
