Richardson Hitchins previews Gervonta Davis vs. Rolly Romero
Via Allan Fox: Lightweight prospect Richardson Hitchins says Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero is too green to beat ‘regular’ WBA lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis in their bout at Showtime Championship Boxing on May 28 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Hitchins noted that 26-year-old kt Rolly (14-0, 12 KOs) didn’t start boxing until he was 17, and that he struggled in bouts with Avery Sparrow and Jackson Marinez.
As far as Hitchins is concerned, the only thing Rolly has for him in this fight is size and strength, which won’t be enough for him to defeat Gervonta.
Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, Leo Santa Cruz, and Mario Barrios made the Davis Tank a one-time devil in their recent battles. For Tank to beat those guys is a red flag that he’s not as good as some boxing fans and members of the media think he is.
You don’t have to struggle against Barrios, Cruz, and a washed Santa Cruz if you’re great. Furthermore, the Tanks struggled against 40-year-old Yuriorkis Gamboa after the Cuban tore through Achilles’ net in the second round.
“I think kt Rolly is a great fighter. I don’t want to say because it sounds cliché, but he was hurt by a guy from Philly 10-3,” lightweight prospect Richardson Hitchins told Fighthype about Rolly Romero not being as brilliant as Gervonta Davis.
“He was injured by [Avery] Sparrows; he was touched by [Jackson] Marinez. Overall, the tank is on another level,” continued Hitchins. “If you [Rolly] get in and have a competitive fight with this guy, then the Tank isn’t the fighter we know he is. “
Strength and size might be more than enough for kt Rolly to win this skirmish if he can get his hands on Tank Davis early. If you’ve watched Rolly’s matches against Marinez & Sparrow, he’s given some terrible punishment on both of those.
You have to credit Marinez & Sparrow for taking so many gruesome shots from Rolly in those bouts as they were hit with punches that could knock down heavyweights.
“I don’t see him going up against Tank. He is looking for power. You can hear how he speaks in his interviews. ‘The tank will run around and so on.
“He called Tank’s boxing match against Isaac Cruz ‘Running.’ He is [Rolly] green and started boxing at 17. This is a guy you can’t take seriously. He has to prove himself.
“Whether Gervonta fights you or not, he must always be smart. One war can change anything. I think that’s what we’re all looking forward to. I really believe I don’t see kt Rolly beat him to anything.
“Kt Rolly had to face tough battles against guys who weren’t up to Tank’s level, guys. [Jackson Marinez] that Richard Commey knocked out in two rounds.
“Rolly is a green fighter. He is looking for power; that’s all he was looking for. He’s the right size for him and the power and nothing else,” Hitchins said. “I had no guess. I had the Tank that won the fight.”
