Contrary to popular belief, taking a break from school isn’t always the best thing after a concussion, a new study published in the journal Neurology suggests. Open JAMA network find. In fact, an early return to school is associated with a reduced symptom burden after a concussion and, ultimately, a faster recovery.

“As a pediatric emergency physician treating hundreds of young adults with new and persistent concussion symptoms, I see too many children being asked to stay out of school until the symptoms are gone, which can be potentially life-threatening. causes more harm and slows recovery, says Dr. Roger Zemek, Senior Scientist at CHEO Research Institute and Professor and Chair of Clinical Research in Pediatric Concussion at the University of University of Ottawa, and the paper’s senior author: research.

These findings come from the largest prospective pediatric concussion cohort study of more than 3,000 young adults aged 5 to 18 years in 9 pediatric emergency departments in Canada in the Canadian Pediatric Emergency Study network. (PERC) and is led by Dr. Zemek as Principal Investigator at the center. CHEO Research Institute. In this sub-study, the investigators examined 1,600 young adults and compared 1,600 young adults returning to school earlier (less than two days) versus later while taking into account factors that might influence timing. decision to return to school (including symptom burden, previous concussion, etc.).

The authors found that returning to school as early as two days was associated with better recovery two weeks after a concussion in adolescents aged 8 to 18 years and the associated benefit in fact. was greatest in the youth with the most symptoms.

“This study suggests that children should do their best to return to school even if they still have symptoms because it will help their recovery. Clinicians can do it themselves. Information informs families that while it is normal to miss a few days of school, prolonged absences can be more harmful.With good symptom management strategies, schools support accommodation, return to school. Learning as early as possible is best,” said Dr. Zemek, who co-led the study. Life guide for concussion in childrenwhich provides healthcare professionals with the diagnosis and management of children and adolescents with concussion with up-to-date evidence-based clinical tools and recommendations.

Study results suggest that there may be a mechanism of therapeutic benefit for early return to school. This could be due to:

  • Early socialization (avoiding the effects of isolation);
  • Reduce stress from not taking too many school breaks;
  • Maintain or return to a normal sleep/wake schedule;
  • Return to safe mild to moderate physical activity sooner (also suitable for previous research headed by the CHEO Research Institute).

Given the myriad of other factors that can influence a child’s return to school after a concussion—including the severity of the injury, specific symptoms, and pre-traumatic factors—there is a need for a large sample size and complex statistical analysis methods. Future studies and clinical trials can help determine how individuals can achieve the optimal time to return to school after a concussion.
