Rare On GoldenEye 007’s Return: “We Just Kept Talking Until We Made It Happen”

The planets aligned a few weeks ago – with Nintendo announcing the classic N64 version GoldenEye 007 will be re-released on modern platforms. Its type a miracle, consider how long the game got stuck in licensing hell.

Rare boss Craig Duncan has now shed some light on the situation behind the scenes during a GI Live panel earlier this week. The team really tried to add the game in Rare replay in 2015 to celebrate the company’s 30th anniversary but licensing issues have plagued it. Finally, the Rare still exists and can make it happen:

Craig Duncan: “Honestly, it took us longer than I would have liked. We tried to line up for it when we did Rare Replay in 2015, which I guess is Rare’s 30th anniversary.

“As you can imagine, the thing about licensing and published games is just complicated… there’s been a lot of conversation, a lot of conversation with our friends at Nintendo who are all at MGM, the people at Xbox, and we just kept talking until we made it happen. We made it, so I’m proud of that.”

The Switch didn’t even come out in 2015, so maybe this worked better for Nintendo. It’s currently “coming soon” to the NSO service, and when it arrives, players can look forward to reliving the game’s solo and split-screen multiplayer. There’s even “online play” for the Switch version of the game.

An Xbox version is also being released – featuring achievements, native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD and smoother frame rates (via Pure Xbox). It will also be available on Game Pass.
