Masahiro Sakurai, the brilliant mind behind a library full of our favorite Nintendo titles, turns to another development story in his latest YouTube video. This time, the discussion is all about Take the Kirby plane as the legendary creator discusses how the idea was conceived, development challenges, and the lasting impact of today’s games.
Air Ride was a huge turning point for the Kirby series (especially since it was released around the time of the more conventional GBA titles). Kirby: Nightmare in dreamland and Kirby & The Magic Mirror), but we think it’s fair to say that this wacky spin on the pink rugby formula worked.
Although the game may not be remembered as much as other Nintendo racing series like Mario Kart or F-Zero (yes, we’re showing it definitely real Changed release to later) Sakurai clearly enjoyed the title. Acting as both designer and director, this is a cross-cutting project for Sakurai (he considers it “one of the [his] creative work”) and it’s interesting to see how creativity has changed the pace of the game after a tough year of development.
