Qualcomm launches next-generation wearable chip, featuring a smaller design, improved performance, and more
Qualcomm unveiled its latest generation of wearable platforms – Snapdragon W5 + Generation 1 and Snapdragon W5 Gen 1. New wearable platforms capable of powering next-generation smartwatches.
According to the company, Snapdragon W5 series of chipsets designed to enhance ultra-low power and breakthrough performance for next-generation connected wearables with a focus on extended battery life, improved user experience and sleek design, creation.
The company claims that OEMs can use these platforms to scale, differentiate, and develop products faster.
Qualcomm Snapdragon W5+ and W5: Features
Qualcomm’s next-generation chipsets are rated for 50% less power consumption, twice the performance, better feature integration, and approximately 30% smaller in size than the previous-generation W4 chip.
The new chips are based on a hybrid architecture based on a 4nm system-on-chip and an always-integrated processor based on 22nm. These chips also come with ultra-low-power Bluetooth 5.3 architecture, low-power island for Wi-Fi, GNSS and Audio, and low-power states like Deep Sleep and Hibernate.
The company has also confirmed that it has partnered with Oppo and Mobvoi and that both brands will be the first to integrate the new W5+ and W5 chips into their smartwatches.
Furthermore, the company also announced two reference designs from Compal and Pagatron, demonstrating the capabilities of the platform and helping companies develop products faster.
