AHMEDABAD: 36th National Sports Festival inaugurated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a glittering opening ceremony on Thursday night in front of more than 100,000 spectators.
In keeping with the Olympic Games but with a modern twist, Gujarat’s swimming star Maana Patel brought the torch symbolizing Unity into the arena and handed it over to the Prime Minister.

Followed and applauded by a number of current and past sports icons, including Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, Olympic medalists PV Sindhu, Ravi Dahiya, Mirabai Chanu, Gagan Narang, former National hockey captain and new HI captain Dilip Tirkey with world championship medalist Anju Bobby George, Prime Minister placed the torch on the podium so it was lit with augmented reality.

As the Prime Minister stood up to speak, a roar as loud as a thousand lions resounded in the stadium, underscoring his continued popularity in the state.

“This scene, this atmosphere cannot be described in words. At the biggest stadium in the world, one of the youngest countries in the world is witnessing India’s biggest sports festival.” I said.

“The country’s sports budget has grown by about 70% in the last eight years. Until eight years ago, Indian athletes participated in less than 100 international events. Now Indian athletes participate in it. more than 300 international events,” added the Prime Minister.
Praising the theme behind the Olympic anthem, ‘Judega India, Jitega India’, the Prime Minister suggested that the National Games will act as a launching pad for all young players.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also represented more than 7,000 athletes from “everywhere in the country”, on behalf of every Gujarati in the state and around the world.
In keeping with age-old Olympic custom, the ‘Ek Bharat’, a bygone ceremonial parade, of athletes from 36 Nations and Union Territories plus Services followed.
The biggest applause went to the 700-man Gujarat team, led by tennis star Ankita Raina, who also took the oath on behalf of all the athletes.
