They all talked about how the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh had taught them well to deal with public life – taking part in military processions had become a regular part of their lives.

But even the King, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward had to find their composure amid personal grief and rally themselves for what was to come.

First, we found it to be new King reunited with Queen outside Holyroodhouse, the moment his mother’s coffin leaves her official Scottish residence for the last time.

King Charles paused before beginning to march slowly behind her, shoulder to shoulder with his siblings.

He can shoulder the heaviest of responsibilities, but they all share the same feeling of sadness.

A family in silent remembrance

And then the ritual: The heads bowed around the coffin. A time for four people to quietly remember.

They appeared to be lost in thought, as members of the public were still allowed to pass through to pay their respects inside St Giles Cathedral.

While it was another day with moments of pause, it was also a reminder of the relentless schedule the new King was keeping.

On Tuesday he moved to Northern Ireland, the cameras moving with him, as he hopes to bring with it a positive public reaction every step of the way.
