plfs: ‘Most migrants move to the same state in 2020-21’: PLFS
The country’s migration rate stood at 28.9% in the July 2020-21 period, of which the male migration rate was 10.7% and the female migration rate was 47.9%. According to the survey, the migration rate for any type of person (e.g. rural or urban, male or female), is the percentage of migrants of that type of person.
Information on migration characteristics of household members, detailed information on temporary residents of the household arriving after March 2020 and continuously staying in the household for a period of 15 days or more but less than six months were collected as part of the PLFS survey to get a better picture of internal migration. The massive exodus triggered by the lockdown in the aftermath of the pandemic has prompted calls for better data on the issue to devise policies to combat the rise of such movement. .
The data show that nearly 50% of men migrated from rural areas, while 47% from urban areas according to the location of their last usual residence. Among women, this proportion is 78.8% coming from rural areas and 21% from urban centers. Of all migrants, 73.4% come from rural areas and 25.9% in urban centers.
In the same state, 65.6% of men are in rural areas and 31.4% in urban centers. For women, this rate is 92.6% in rural areas and 7.2% in urban areas. In this category, 2.9% came from other countries for men and 0.2% for women and 0.7% overall.
The survey examined the distribution of internal migrants according to four categories of migration flows, including rural to rural, rural to urban, urban to rural and urban to urban. For men, from rural to rural areas is estimated to be 18%, from urban to rural areas 20.8%, from rural to urban areas 33.5% and from urban to urban areas 27.6 %.
