Phillies erase 5-run deficit, stun Astros in 10th inning to win World Series opener

JT Realmuto hosts in the 10th round and the Philadelphia Phillies, saved by right-hander Nick Castellanos missed, beat the Houston Astros 6-5 Friday night in the World Series opener.

Defeated 5-0 early to Astros ace Justin Verlander, the Phillies became the first team in 20 years to make it past the group stage five games to win a World Series game.

They can thank Castellanos for the opportunity. Known more for his bat than his gloves, he dived in to land a superb pounce on Jeremy Pena’s hitter with a two-pass in the ninth inning and second-place finisher.

Realmuto, who hit a brace, twice in a row in the fifth game in Verlander, completed the comeback in Houston as he led the 10th game by sending a quick ball from Luis Garcia take the seat on the right.

Kyle Tucker has scored twice for the Astros, who have been 7-0 down this season.

Houston had a chance at the 10th goal when Alex Bregman doubled the lead with one. After Yuli Gurriel won two places to walk, David Robertson unleashed a wild throw that put second and third.

Aledmys Diaz was then set 2-0 by David Robertson – but referee James Hoye ruled that Diaz leaned over the pitch and did not allow him to go out first to load the bases.

Diaz fixed the score 3-1 to end it.

The last team to take a 5-0 lead in the World Series was the San Francisco Giants in 2002, who squandered their chance in Game 6 to take down the Angels and win the championship under coach Dusty Baker.

Baker saw that happen again as the Astros coach, with the same 6-5 aggregate scoreline.

The 106-match Astros haven’t lost to anyone since Philadelphia beat them on October 3 to claim a spot in the standings as the third-place team.

The surprising Phillies, who have two championships, are in the World Series for the first time since 2009. They came back from a 21-29 start which resulted in coach Joe Girardi being fired with a 66 finish. -46 to reach the knockout round.

They won their eighth pennant sending the San Diego Padres in five games in the NLCS under coach Rob Thomson, a native of Sarnia, Ont.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson from Ontario is ready for the World Series

Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson is heading to the World Series and he has the backing of his hometown of Corruna, Ont.

Houston took the lead in large part thanks to Tucker’s two hosts. But the Phillies boomed again as Verlander once again struggled in the World Series.

Perfect as he took a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning, he started after the fifth round with a 5-all score. That leaves him a 0-6 lead with an ERA of 6.07 in eight career World Series starts – hardly a match for a pitcher expected to receive his third Cy Young Award soon. .

The Astros fell 0-5 in their World Series opener and dropped their first game of the season after sweeping the AL Division Series and AL Championship Series.

Seranthony Dominguez threw a ninth goalless win as Castellanos made another excellent ninth catch after this season, which is certainly a game saver.

With Jose Altuve at the second base after twice hitting people and stealing his base, Pena hit a ball that flew off the bat at 68 mph and only traveled about 200 feet. Castellanos ran a long distance, then with a swing he made a final catch while sliding to the ground.

In the opening game of the NL Division Series against Atlanta, Castellanos drove for three runs and helped preserve the lead with a slightly similar catch in the ninth game of that 7-6 victory.

In their fourth World Series in six years – and after losing to Atlanta in six games last year – these Astros are looking to hand Baker his first title as manager and secure his second. after winning it in 2017, a title was marred by a sign-stealing scandal.

Philadelphia’s Zack Wheeler protested to Framber Valdez as the series continued on Saturday night.
