Via Dan Ambrose: Bernard Hopkins says Oscar De La Hoya is still trying to make the fight between Ryan Garcia and Geronta ‘The Tank’ Davis.
Last Saturday night, De La Hoya announced he had abandoned the idea of bringing the Tank and Ryan together because he was unable to speak to Gervonta’s leadership.
Hopkins said he would be “embarrassed” if the Davis-Ryan fight wasn’t done within the next five months. It doesn’t help that De La Hoya talks about his thoughts on Ryan being on the same level in negotiations.
Ryan also shot himself in the foot when he said he wouldn’t back down to 135. He wanted the Davis Tank to go up to 140 so the fight could happen there.
“I will be embarrassed if you ask me this in five months without anything specific,” Bernard Hopkins told Against TV Hub about the fight between Gervonta ‘The Tank’ Davis and Ryan Garcia.
“We are not going to do the blame game here. Neither side blames the other, but we shouldn’t break the rules in how things are supposed to be done.
“Do we negotiate as two powerful companies, or do we negotiate through the media and let the media say who is right and who is wrong? This is about business. This isn’t even about ego.
“Both sides have to sit down with their champions and hash it out,” says Hopkins.
Bernard said: “A fighter should have more say than promoters. “Oscar is still reaching out as much as possible to bring the two entities a super fight to the world of boxing.
“It’s not because we don’t want to fight. That’s because the boxer doesn’t really want the fight to be based on it being his life, his career. Let them handle the business part.
“You deal with the greatness you can achieve. Until a boxer’s career is over, they can talk about what they should have or could have done,” Hopkins said.
We don’t know how motivated Mayweather Promotions was to pit Gervonta against 23-year-old Ryan. If the fight doesn’t work out, there will be a lot of upset fans.
