Remember how? we begged for Team Ladybug’s stunning shmup sewer to switch to Switch? Well, it looks like someone is listening! PLAYISM will bring the 2D side-scrolling shooter to the eShop on February 2nd.
The port was announced a few months ago, but publisher PLAYISM only revealed the game’s release date today. The stunning visuals should come as no surprise to anyone who’s played the game Team Ladybug – here’s the team behind Touhou Moon Night and Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinthtwo pixel art games that look breathtaking in motion.
Drainus is no different, although it’s not quite pixel art, instead using some fake 3D textures to create an incredibly detailed and unique look. Important for shmup, a genre full of chaotic effects and amazing enemy designs. Only need to see!
However, the unique formula of the game is the ship’s energy drain, which you can use to customize your ship and also unleash more powerful attacks. There are three difficulty modes, and Team Ladybug marketed the game as an “enjoyable” shmup that players of all levels can enjoy.
We have some more information about this incredible game below, as well as our own thoughts when we played the game on Steam last year:
Modern evolution of 2D shooter for all players
DRAINAGE is the first original IP created by Team Ladybug, the developers behind Touhou Moon Night (derivative work of Touhou Project with over 300,000 copies sold) and Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth (A derivative of the very popular Record of Lodoss War franchise).
The player controls “DRAINUS”, a fighter with unique energy absorption abilities. Any enemy’s energy flames can be absorbed and released back in another way. In addition, stored energy can also be used to customize and enhance DRAINUS features. Ladybug team goal with DRAINAGE is to create a shooting game that players of all levels can enjoy.
The game comes with three difficulty settings, “Easy” and “Normal” for beginners and casual players, as well as “Hard” for seasoned veterans of the genre. . After completing the first game, players will also unlock two additional modes geared towards competitive gameplay.
In May 2022, the PC version was released on Steam without any prior notice to the positive feedback from the gaming community regarding its quality and overall excellence. We’re excited to be able to bring that experience to the Nintendo Switch community on February 2, 2023.
Take control of “DRAINUS”, a ship that can absorb energy attacks, to bring down countless enemy ships in space. Absorbed energy can be used to enhance ship functions, such as retrofitting new weapons.
The planet Halpax, located in the far reaches of space, is under the oppressive rule of the Kharlal Empire. One of the slaves residing there is battling a disease known as “Planetary Incompatibility Disorder”, he must return home to distant planet Earth for a cure. His daughter Irina, also a slave, was both devastated by her father’s illness and helpless to do anything.
At that moment, a humanoid named Ghenie, which strangely resembles a frog, appeared in front of Irina and said, “I come from the future 30 years. A galactic war is about to break out, in which more than 5,000 planets will be destroyed by the Kharlal Empire. I have come this time to stop that war and the oppressive rule of the Kharlal Empire. I need your help.”
“Why me? What can I do?”, Irina didn’t know what was happening, but her father’s condition was getting worse by the minute. With no time to hesitate and no place to turn, she took Gehnie’s green hand and set off, embarking on a journey to her distant home planet while defeating the Kharlal Empire once. and forever.

The most distinctive feature of this game is the “reflector”, a DRAINUS function that allows the ship to absorb energy-based enemy fire for a period of time when activated, before allowing You unleash them all back in a devastating counterattack.
The absorbed energy is also stored in a reservoir, which can be used to customize and enhance the various functions of the DRAINUS.
