New device for hard-to-treat brain aneurysms
One of the common treatments for aneurysms is the placement of tiny platinum coils. However, it has its limitations.
“If the aneurysm has a wide neck, the coil can fall into a blood vessel and lead to clot formation and incomplete occlusion of the aneurysm. Many times, you must place a stent in a blood vessel to prevent the coils from falling off. out and withheld, says Nimer Adeeb, MD, from the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurosurgery at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, Louisiana.
New device for lateral aneurysm
To overcome those limitations, a braided device called Woven EndoBridge (WEB – larger than the neck of the aneurysm) has been developed. The WEB device has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for wide neck intracranial branch aneurysms.
The team compared the WEB device in distal aneurysms and bilateral aneurysms using a large database from WorldWideWEB, spanning more than 10 years.
“We found that there was no significant difference using the WEB device in lateral wall aneurysms compared with bilateral aneurysms. The results showed that the WEB device was safe and effective to use. used for lateral wall aneurysms Our ultimate goal is to give our patients the best, says Adeeb.
