New CRTC Chair Named Before Controversial Bills Regulating Online Content – National
Heritage minister Pablo Rodriguez appointed Vicky Eatrides the next head of the Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission of Canada.
She will serve as president and chief executive officer of the broadcasting regulator for a five-year term beginning January 5.
Eatrides most recently was assistant secretary at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, a role she assumed in 2019 after taking on a number of senior roles at the Competition Bureau.
She replaces Ian Scott, who has served as CRTC president since 2017.
The change in leadership comes as the regulator finds itself in the national spotlight with two controversial government bills that give the CRTC new powers to pass Parliament.
The Senate is considering Liberal Party bills that would update broadcast laws to include streaming platforms and create a framework for tech giants to pay media outlets for content. .
