Mohammed Shami tests positive for Covid-19, veteran pacer called back

Team India’s T20I return to tempo Mohammed Shami will be delayed and excluded from the upcoming T20 series against Australia starting this week. Pacer was ruled out after he was found positive for Covid-19.

Mohammed Shami will be replaced by another veteran player, 35-year-old Umesh Yadav, who played the last of his seven T20I’s around more than three years ago against Australia back in the chart, after recovering from a quadriceps injury.

“Yes, Shami has tested positive for COVID-19. But there is nothing to worry about because of the mild symptoms. But he will have to isolate and will be able to rejoin the first team once the test is negative. Really not luckily but that’s how life is,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity. Umesh Yadav had a great first leg at the 2022 IPL for KKR as he turned with great speed.

When asked how long he thinks Shami will take to recover, the source seems hopeful that he will be fit for the next series against South Africa.

“We are expecting Shami to be fit for the next series against South Africa. There are 10 days left before that series starts. So we hope you can say more,” he said.

But the return of 35-year-old Umesh is no fairy tale in this format as his county stint with MIddlesex was cut short due to a quadriceps injury.

The source said: “Umesh is in rehabilitation at the NCA after he came back and has no tears in his eyes.

Meanwhile, since July 2022, Mohammed Shami has not been seen on the field. He hasn’t played T20 International since November 2021. However, his experience and performance in the IPL – 20 wins in 16 matches for the champion Gujarat Titans – is considered by the selectors. valuable asset, making them keep him on standby for the World Cup.

The matches against Australia on September 20, 23 and 25 and South Africa on September 28, October 2 and October 4 are India’s last T20I matches ahead of next month’s World Cup. They therefore gave the team an opportunity to assess Shami’s fitness after a two-month break from cricket.

These matches will cater to Men in Blue quality matches for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, which runs from October 16 to November 13 this year.

India couldn’t even make it past the semi-finals last year when they were knocked out of the competition at the Super 12 stage.

Team India for Australia T20Is: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (keeper), Dinesh Karthik (keeper), Hardik Pandya , R. Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohd. Shami, Harshal Patel, Deepak Chahar and Jasosystem Bumrah.
