Mila Kunis Shares How Devastated She Is For Ukraine, Raises $20 Million In Aid

Russia Invaded Ukraine In February, With Russian President Vladimir Putin call it a “special military operation.” Citizens have been forced to flee their homes for refuge and heartbreaking photos of the devastation and people hiding in subway bomb shelters have surfaced across social media. For actress Mila Kunis, who was born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, it’s deeply personal. She and her husband Ashton Kutcher raised nearly $20 million with GoFundMe to aid Ukraine.

Kunis spoke to Maria Shriver for her digital series Conversations on noise and explained that she was devastated by the devastation of her country. Kunis moved to the US at an early age and says she didn’t always feel a strong connection to Ukraine.

“I have always felt like an American,” said Kunis. “People are like, ‘Oh, you’re so Eastern European.’ I said, ‘I’m so LA What do you mean?’ All my life, I’ve been like LA all through and through. Then this happened — and mind you, we had friends in Ukraine, and Ash and I went and met [President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy right before COVID. I’ve been there, but always considered myself an American. ”

She continued, “This happened and I can’t put into words or explain what happened to me, but all of a sudden I was really like, ‘Oh my God, I feel like a piece of my heart. just ripped off.” It was the weirdest feeling”.

Kunis wants to make it clear that she is not in favor of invading Russia.

“I don’t think we need to see the Russian people as the enemy. I really want to emphasize that,” emphasized Kunis. “I don’t think that has been talked about enough in the press. I think now there’s the ‘If you’re not with us, you’re against us’ mentality. I don’t want people to confuse the two happenings. I don’t think it’s the Russian people. I don’t want ‘all Russians are terrible people.’ I don’t want that to be an excuse. I encourage people to look at it from the perspective of, ‘It’s the people in power, not the people themselves.’
