Mexican authorities are warning about the dangers of a viral TikTok challenge that leaves students intoxicated after taking a controlled drug.
With the tagline “The last to fall asleep wins,” the challenge included trying to stay awake after taking clonazepam, a drug used to treat seizures, panic attack and worry.
One side effect of the drug is drowsiness.
Medical workers treated five drunken teenagers at a school in Mexico City, the capital’s public security department said on Thursday.
Authorities in the northern state of Nuevo Leon have reported three cases there.
None of the students were seriously ill.
Nuevo Health Secretary Leon Alma Rosa said: “Unfortunately, challenges that spread online often put people’s health at risk.
Several videos have been posted on TikTok of people recording themselves taking the drug to observe the effects.
Other users have posted videos warning of the dangers of the challenge, which has also happened before in Chile.
