After the victory, during the award ceremony, when MessI walked up to the podium, he was presented with a black robe by the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Called ‘bisht’, this caught the attention of many viewers, who were still confused as to why Messi was wearing a black robe?

Some took to twitter with their questions about Bisht. Some argue that this weakens the LM10 jersey with the Argentina shirt. However, Messi then opted for Argentina’s more familiar blue-and-white striped jersey, which features three gold stars – one for each World Cup.

Messi featured the image of wearing the traditional ‘bisht’ robe that the emir gave to the emblem of Argentina. Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani draped the shirt over Messi’s shoulders and the Argentinian conductor seemed delighted to be given the honor.

What is the meaning of Bisht?

Bisht is a traditional Qatari dress worn by royal families, politicians, religious scholars and the wealthy on special occasions. According to Arabic news, no fabric is considered better than ‘Bisht’ to make a difference in such momentous occasions.

In the Gulf country Bisht are worn on special occasions and signify an honorary designation. Winning the FIFA World Cup definitely counts as one. Therefore, it seems appropriate that a garment normally reserved for high-ranking figures, as a sign of honor, be presented to Messi in recognition of his career, hard work and achievements.

Many people questioned Messi wearing Bisht when he went on stage to receive the trophy and the Golden Ball. While it may have been a sign of honor for the Arabs, many match-watchers saw the move as unnecessary and an attempt to overshadow Messi’s historic achievement.

Pablo Zabaleta, who played with Messi at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, asked “Why? There’s no reason to do that.”
