McMurtry aims for Goodwood hill climb record with avid Speirling fan’s car
At the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the British company McMurtry launches Speirling, a tiny (only 126 inches long) but powerful electric car that strips out obstructing aerodynamic features with a fan-powered ground-effect system that generates downforce. We’re talking about the ability to generate more than 4,400 pounds (up from 1,100 pounds before) of downforce when stalled.
For this year’s festival, which runs from June 23-26, McMurtry plans to do the shootout hill climb on Sunday of the event, aiming to not only win but also record. The current record for a 1.16-mile hill climb around the grounds of Goodwood House is 39.9 seconds set in 2019 by Romain Dumas, behind the wheel of Volkswagen ID.R 670 hp special time attack.
The Speirling certainly stands a chance with its incredible downforce, more than what a Formula 1 car produces at up to 150 mph, coupled with the high power generated by a pair of electric motors driving the car. rear. Powering the motor is a 60 kilowatt-hour battery.
McMurtry doesn’t say how powerful the Speirling is but claims the car has approximately one horsepower for every 2.2 pounds of weight. The vehicle’s weight is claimed to be under 2,200 pounds.
Performance claims include a 0-60 mph time of under 1.5 seconds and a top speed of 150 mph, the latter of which is limited due to the hill-climbing McMurtry transmission setup. Usually top speed is over 200 mph.
Tasked with driving is former F1 driver Max Chilton, who was hired in february as an early development driver for Speirling.

“The largely continuous downforce is an innovative feature to exploit as a driver,” Chilton said in a statement. “It’s very different from what I’ve driven in F1 and IndyCar, and this year’s testing has required me to adapt my driving style to maximize performance.”
Qualifying for the hill climb will take place on June 25, with a penalty shootout to take place the following day.
