Mass leave crews sent IndiGo just in time for Saturday; DGCA seeks airline report

NEW DELHI: A sudden shortage of flight attendants resulted in hundreds of IndiGo flights being delayed on Saturday (July 2). Union Aviation Ministry data shows that only 45% of IndiGo flights were able to operate on time (within 15 minutes of scheduled departure) on Saturday. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) sought a report from the airline – which over the years has built a reputation for punctuality – of a sudden, dramatic drop.
Comments from IndiGo have been sought and await.
Over the past few months, crew dissatisfaction has increased amid IndiGo’s repeated pay cuts during the pandemic. To be sure, the post-Omicron resurgence in domestic traffic has been hit hard by soaring fuel prices forcing airlines to raise airfares.
On July 2, 2022, some IndiGo flights were delayed to wait for flight attendants. Ministry data shows 2,591 domestic flights and 46 international flights operated on Saturday. The on-time performance of different airlines on Saturday was: AirAsia India with 98.3%, GoFirst 88%, Vistara 86.3%, SpiceJet 80.4% and Indian Airlines 77.1%. IndiGo is at a bottom of 45.2%, possibly the worst number ever.
